Lessons from Building a Complementary Product

Indie Hackers often suggest creating smaller, complementary products as a marketing strategy. Taking this advice, I developed a Theme Generator to support my main product, ZippyStarter.

Quick to conceive and fun to build, this project took just a couple of days. It's proven useful for many. But the big question: how did it impact revenue?

While the Theme Generator wasn't a massive revenue driver—I sold about 15 extra copies—it provided valuable insights:

  1. I learned effective strategies, particularly Reddit, where about half of the Theme Generator's traffic originates.

  2. User Behaviour: Interestingly, some customers bought ZippyStarter thinking the Theme Generator was included, revealing unexpected demand.

  3. The experience highlighted the potential of smaller, focused tools in attracting user interest.

Given this interest, I'm considering making the Theme Generator available separately. To gauge demand and gather feedback, I'm exploring a limited pre-sale for $79.00 for the first 20 sales.

The code isn't available immediately but will be available this week (if anyone parts with their cold-hard cash), I’ll prepare documentation to go with it, and a few videos, is there anything else you think I should include?

I'm curious about your thoughts. What additional features or resources would make this valuable to you? Your input can help shape the final product offering.

That’s all for now.
